THIS MONTH IN WILDLIFE SIGHTINGS #MAY2026

As a naturalist at Aramness, my deepest passion has always been to explore the wild heart of Gir and witness the untamed stories that unfold every single day.

No two safaris are ever the same here, especially in summer, when the forest reveals its rawest and most dramatic side.

One of the most moving moments this season has been watching the Ratanguna pride (Jai-veeru) thrive. Despite the harsh summer and constant territorial pressure from two dominant males, (Phool Bhai-Mota Bhai) the lionesses have shown incredible resilience in protecting their cubs. Nature, however, is never without heartbreak. A lioness from the Jai and Veeru pride sadly lost her cubs, a reminder that survival in the wild is both beautiful and unforgiving.

Summer in Gir is a season of transformation. The golden grasslands shimmer under the intense sun, while pockets of green still cling to life around watering holes and riverbeds. Dust rises behind every safari vehicle, peacocks call through the teak forests, and predators move with calculated patience toward the last remaining water sources. These changing colours and moods of the forest create unforgettable encounters for our guests, especially with Gir’s magnificent big cats.

One particularly memorable sighting was of a the white-throated kingfisher resting near a jungle water point during the afternoon heat. Exhausted from the rising temperatures, it quietly drank water before suddenly taking flight into the forest canopy, leaving everyone speechless at the brilliance of its colours against the dry summer landscape. Moments like these remind us that Gir’s magic lies not only in its lions, but also in the countless small wonders hidden within the wilderness

Summer safaris are truly among the most exciting experiences in the bush. Every drive brings the possibility of discovering something extraordinary, fresh pugmarks on a dusty trail, or a pride of lions resting beneath the shade of an ancient banyan tree. Even the smallest details of the jungle come alive for those willing to slow down and observe.

Apart from this, the Jai-Veeru pride continues to show remarkable strength, with the cubs growing healthier and more confident with every passing sighting. It has also been exciting to witness the rapid growth of the Salman and Bhupat prides this season. The young lions are becoming increasingly active and independent, often seen exploring deeper into the territory under the watchful eyes of the lionesses. Watching these prides expand and establish themselves across Gir is a powerful reminder of the resilience and thriving spirit of the wilderness
